Shu’Mata Camp is a remote and elegant safari retreat set on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro within a private Maasai concession in northern Tanzania. The camp features five spacious canvas tents, each positioned to provide wide panoramic views across the savannah toward Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. The tents are styled with a classic East African safari aesthetic, combining vintage charm with Maasai and Swahili-inspired decor. Each tent includes a private veranda, a main bedroom with either a king-size or twin bed setup, and an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and a safari-style bucket shower. Shu’Mata operates entirely on solar power, with lighting in the rooms and charging stations available for low-powered electronics like phones and cameras.

The main lounge and dining areas are set on an elevated terrace, offering expansive views over the plains. Meals are freshly prepared, often served under the stars or out in the bush on special excursions. The camp maintains a close relationship with the local Maasai community, and activities include guided walking safaris, cultural visits to nearby bomas, nature drives, and hikes through the surrounding acacia woodland and volcanic hills. Wildlife frequently seen in the area includes giraffe, zebra, eland, and elephant, with occasional sightings of lions and cheetahs. While not a Big Five destination, Shu’Mata offers a quiet and immersive wilderness experience ideal for guests looking for a combination of comfort, cultural interaction, and natural beauty. Access to the camp is typically via road from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, with a travel time of approximately two to three hours.
