Lake Manyara National Park may be compact compared to Tanzania’s larger parks, but it packs in an incredible variety of landscapes and wildlife. Stretching from the alkaline lake at its heart to groundwater forests and open savannahs, the park’s scenery changes quickly and dramatically as you explore.

One of the park’s biggest highlights is its namesake — Lake Manyara, a shallow soda lake that draws thousands of flamingos and other migratory birds. It's a birder’s paradise, with over 400 species recorded, including pelicans, storks, hornbills, and fish eagles.

In the forested areas, you might spot elephants moving silently between fig and mahogany trees, as well as troops of baboons — often in large numbers. But the park's most talked-about residents are its tree-climbing lions, known for perching in branches during the heat of the day — a rare and fascinating behavior.

Lake Manyara also offers unique safari experiences like canoeing (seasonal), walking safaris, and close-up views of wildlife along the lake’s edge. With its stunning setting beneath the dramatic cliffs of the Rift Valley and its rich blend of ecosystems, Lake Manyara is a perfect start or end to any northern Tanzania safari circuit.
