Whether you’re climbing Kilimanjaro, exploring the wild plains of West Kilimanjaro, or venturing across Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, this page answers the most frequently asked questions before your journey with Westmanjaro.
- 1. Where does my trip with Westmanjaro begin?
- Your adventure begins right where Kilimanjaro meets the open plains — in West Kilimanjaro. Our main office and operations base are located here, allowing us to welcome guests directly to the region without long transfers through Moshi or Arusha.
- When you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our team will be there to greet you. We handle all airport transfers, ensuring you are comfortably dropped off at your designated lodge or camp according to your itinerary. From the moment you land, Westmanjaro takes care of every detail — so your journey begins seamlessly.
- 2. When is the best time to visit Tanzania and climb Kilimanjaro?
-
Tanzania offers unforgettable travel experiences all year round, though conditions vary by season:
- June to October (Dry Season): Clear skies, cooler weather, and ideal conditions for trekking and wildlife viewing.
- November to May (Green Season): Lush landscapes, fewer travelers, and excellent photography and birdwatching opportunities.
- 3. Do I need a visa to enter Tanzania?
- Most travelers require a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. This can be obtained online through the Tanzania eVisa portal or on arrival at the airport. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
- If your itinerary includes Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, you may need a separate Kenyan visa or an East Africa Tourist Visa for travel between Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
- 4. How do I get to West Kilimanjaro?
- The easiest and most convenient route is via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located between Arusha and Moshi. The airport receives international flights from major hubs including Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Doha, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi.
- Upon arrival, the Westmanjaro team personally greets you at the airport and provides private ground transfers to your lodge or camp as outlined in your itinerary. The drive to West Kilimanjaro takes approximately two hours, passing through scenic savannah, farmland, and the mountain’s western slopes.
- If your itinerary starts in Moshi or Arusha for a Kilimanjaro climb or safari, we’ll arrange transfers accordingly. From touchdown to check-in, Westmanjaro manages every transfer so you can relax and enjoy your journey.
- 5. What health precautions should I take before traveling?
-
Visit a travel clinic at least six weeks before departure. Recommended vaccinations and precautions include:
- Yellow fever (required for some travelers)
- Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Tetanus
- Malaria prevention medication
- 6. What currency should I bring?
- The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars (issued after 2009) are widely accepted. ATMs are available at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), in Bomang’ombe, and the nearby town of Sanya Juu, which are convenient options for those starting their journey in West Kilimanjaro. Additional ATMs can also be found in Moshi and Arusha.
- 7. How does Westmanjaro support responsible tourism?
- As a locally based operator, Westmanjaro works closely with the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, Serval Wildlife Sanctuary, and nearby Maasai communities to promote responsible tourism, wildlife conservation, and sustainable community development. Through these partnerships, our guests experience authentic cultural interactions while supporting initiatives that help preserve Tanzania’s natural and cultural heritage.
- 8. What should I pack for my trip?
-
Essentials include:
- Light clothing for warm days and layers for cool evenings
- Waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
- Daypack, reusable water bottle, and camera
- Travel insurance and required travel documents
- 9. Is travel insurance required?
-
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is essential, especially for Kilimanjaro climbs.
It should cover:
- High-altitude trekking
- Medical evacuation and emergency transport
- Trip cancellation and interruption
- 10. Can I combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a safari?
- Absolutely. Many guests extend their climb into a safari through Lake Natron, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, or Tarangire. We also organize cross-border extensions to Amboseli National Park in Kenya for a seamless East African experience.
- 11. Can I stay connected while traveling?
- Most lodges and camps offer Wi-Fi, and local SIM cards are available at the airport. Keep in mind that remote areas like Lake Natron or the high slopes of Kilimanjaro have limited connectivity — a perfect opportunity to disconnect and enjoy nature.
- 12. What if I have more questions?
- We’re always here to help. Contact our team anytime for personalized travel planning, packing advice, or itinerary customization. From your first inquiry to your farewell at Kilimanjaro, Westmanjaro ensures every journey runs seamlessly.
